Totori to rely on speed

Wellington Phoenix striker Benjamin Totori is confident he will be able to cope with the physicality of the A-League.

The diminutive Solomon Island s front-man has spent much of his football career playing in New Zealand s domestic competition or in his homeland, aside from an injury-plagued stint with MLS club the Portland Timbers in 2008.

But the fast striker is undaunted about making the step up to the A-League and was one of the standout players at the recent OFC Nations Cup in Honiara, where he scored three times in matches against New Zealand.

My strength is just my speed and I have to play the ball early before the tackles come in, he said.

I ve got a game that I can beat the physicality of the other teams.

Southampton sign Chelsea outcast Romeu

Oriol Romeu has ended a frustrating four-year stint with Chelsea by signing for Premier League rivals Southampton.

Romeu joined Chelsea from Barcelona in July 2011 and was on the bench for their UEFA Champions League final win over Bayern Munich later that season.

Eriksson questions Beckham omission

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he would have chosen David Beckham to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The LA Galaxy midfielder revealed last week Team GB coach Stuart Pearce had opted not to hand him one of the three over-age slots for the Under-23 Olympic football tournament, with Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards chosen instead.

Beckham was England captain during Eriksson s reign, and the Swede believes the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star should have been afforded a space due to his status.

I would have picked him, put him on the bench at the very least, the 64-year-old told the BBC.

He is an icon, he should be involved in the Olympic Games in some way.

The former Real Madrid man, wh…

De Gea? If I were Real Madrid, I´d think of another player – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told Real Madrid to forget about signing star goalkeeper David de Gea, advising the Spanish and European champions to look elsewhere.

Madrid hold a long-standing interest in Spain international De Gea, who almost joined the LaLiga giants in mid-2015.

The 27-year-old former Atletico Madrid keeper – contracted to United until 2019 – continues to be linked with Zinedine Zidane s men.

Van Dijk: Netherlands have to look at ourselves in the mirror after Belarus close call

Virgil van Dijk admitted Netherlands were out of sorts in Belarus after they relied on the brilliance of Georginio Wijnaldum to secure a narrow victory.

The 2-1 success in Minsk puts Netherlands on the brink of qualifying for Euro 2020, ending the team s recent exile from major tournament football.

After missing out on Euro 2016 and last year s World Cup, Netherlands finally appear to have got their act together under coach Ronald Koeman s leadership.

Van Dijk s Liverpool team-mate Wijnaldum scored both goals for the Dutch, heading in a clinical opener before thundering in a long-range strike to give the visitors a 2-0 half-time cushion.

Wijnaldum later said his second of the night was by far the best of the 15 goals he has netted for his country.
