Gavi loses number six jersey after LaLiga blocks Barcelona registration

Gavi has lost his first-team status and shirt number at Barcelona after his registration was blocked by LaLiga.

The Spain international was registered as a first-team player by Barca in January, and it was announced he would wear the number six shirt.

Yet LaLiga sought to overturn a court decision that ruled in Barcelona s favour, with the league getting its way earlier in March, entitling it to reverse Gavi s registration.

Barcelona have been told they cannot register the 18-year-old s contract as they do not have room in their wage bill.

Gavi has subsequently been placed back on his youth contract, meaning he could leave Barca as a free agent at the end of the season.

A move away from Camp Nou for the teenager is unlikely. However, as it stands,…

Guardiola proud Manchester City have avoided champions´ curse

Pep Guardiola is delighted by the strength of Manchester City s title defence and said a win over Chelsea on Sunday will ensure his side challenge Liverpool all the way for the Premier League trophy.

City entertain Maurizio Sarri s side knowing victory will bring them level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, although the Reds will have played one game fewer than the champions.

Chelsea are fifth in the table – the position they finished in last season, just a year after winning the title under Antonio Conte in 2016-17.

Guardiola expressed his pride at having seen his side avoid the fate that befell Chelsea and others, with Manchester United the last team to successfully defend the title in 2008-09.

I know in the last five or s…

Rob Edwards says alleged racist remark towards Carlton Morris reported to police

Luton boss Rob Edwards said South Yorkshire Police are investigating an alleged racist comment towards Carlton Morris in his side’s Boxing Day win at Sheffield United.

The striker complained of a comment made from the home crowd late in the second half, which left him “pretty angry”, and the police have spoken to him.

It soured what was a great day for Morris as he came off the bench to create two own goals in four minutes which earned the Hatters a vital 3-2 victory in the crunch basement Premier League battle at Bramall Lane.

Edwards said: “There was an alleged racist comment, the police are dealing with that, they have spoken to Carlton and got his take on it, so it is with them now; I have no more comment on it.

“He is alright – he was, at…

Roma not signing Smalling permanently?

According to a recent report from over in Italy, Roma are unlikely to take part in a permanent deal for Chris Smalling due to Manchester United’s asking price. The Englishman really did hit the ground running when he made his way over to Italy, instantly embedding himself as a regular within Roma’s starting XI.

Ever since then the expectation has been that Roma would try and sign him on a permanent basis, despite many believing that his instinct was to go back to United and try to break back into the first team over there.

Now, United may well be pricing Roma out of the deal altogether. It makes sense for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to try and bring him back to the club as he’d still be one of his better options, but you have to wonder whether or not the Norwegian …

Slavia Prague 1-3 Inter: Martinez and Lukaku boost Champions League knockout hopes

Inter s Champions League fate is in their own hands after Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku inspired a 3-1 win at Slavia Prague on Wednesday.

Martinez s crisp finish put Inter ahead before they saw a second goal chalked off and Slavia instead awarded a penalty, which Tomas Soucek converted to tee up a draw that would do little for either side.

But late strikes from the outstanding Lukaku and Martinez secured the precious points for Inter as they bid to reach the knockout stage.

Antonio Conte s men are second in Group F on seven points, ahead of third-placed Borussia Dortmund on head-to-head.

Inter will qualify if they beat Barcelona in a mammoth San Siro showdown on matchday six, while Dortmund host now-eliminated Slavia and hope for a Nerazzurri sli…

Juventus may have met their match with former boss Conte

Inter head coach Antonio Conte seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to winning league titles. The Italian was the man responsible for setting Juventus’ current domination in motion.

Now the man who created the Bianconeri dynasty could well be the one who also wrecks it too. After Monday night’s results, Inter and Juventus are level on points, with the reigning champions ahead courtesy of the superior head-to-head record.

Antonio Conte revived Juventus

Juventus have now won the Italian title in the last eight seasons. Conte was the Bianconeri head coach in season 2011/12 when they returned to Serie A and started their current stellar run of titles. The fact that he guided the team to success in their first season back in the Italian top-flight was incredible.…

Bale matches Ronaldo, Messi with Club World Cup hat-trick

Gareth Bale joined a prestigious group after scoring a brilliant hat-trick for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup on Wednesday.

The Wales international squeezed Madrid s opening goal past Kashima Antlers goalkeeper Kwoun Sun-tae shortly before half-time and pounced on a defensive mix-up after the break to score again, with his third goal soon after putting the result beyond doubt in the second semi-final.

Bale has now scored in three different editions of the competition, having also found the net in 2014 and 2017, a feat only previously achieved by two other players.

Of course, those two just happen to be former Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo netted for Manchester United in 2008, then again for Madrid…
